Do I Need a Mobile Website? | WSI Yorkshire Blog

More and more people are accessing the internet using a smart phone to search for services and indeed buy products. ?billions are traded every year on websites via smart phones. So why would a business need a mobile version of a website?

Why Have a Mobile Version of your website?

  • Mobile sites can be prioritised on mobile versions of Google. Google wants to give the best experience to their users; a site built to the correct format that doesn?t need to be pinched on every page to display legibly is obviously preferable.
  • Many businesses have a ready audience e.g.
    • Companies marketing to outdoor businesses like construction
    • Distress purchases such as broken glass, wrong fuel, flood damage, locksmiths, late hotel rooms, holidays.
  • Not all pages need replicating a smaller 3-5 or 7 page website is adequate for many businesses
  • Mobile searches are increasing month on month ? this is due to the increase in the number of people using tablets, smart phones and now the introduction of 4G to mobile phone networks.
  • Since last year, according to a recent study, mobile Internet usage has increased by 37% in the UK alone.? Making the UK the highest user of Mobile Internet Technology.
  • Stay ahead and stand out from the competition by having a mobile website.
  • Help enhance your page ranking (Google likeability).
  • Once your mobile website has been created, the maintenance is much easier.
  • Mobile websites enables a much quicker speed for downloading / browsing the Internet.
  • Mobile phone website allows businesses to be more interactive through the engaging of consumers by enabling mobile specific features and specifications e.g. click-to-call.
  • Helps businesses to integrate with off-line media ? use the QR codes that will help you to close the gap between online and offline media?elements.
  • Mobile phone sites are more flexible than building / creating a mobile app. Also mobile websites are much more cost effective.
  • Helps to simplify messages that you are trying to send out to your target audience by getting straight to the point.
  • Google have recently, publicly stated that mobile phone websites will help with the overall search rankings of their online website, as integration between websites and mobile sites become more important for users.

What About Responsive Design

Responsive Website design is in other words a ?media query? that establishes the resolution size of the devices server.

?

Websites can be built and designed from the start using ?responsive design?, i.e. design that adjusts itself to the different sizes of devices however:

  • Responsive design often means designing everything 3-4 times, which in turns makes a website much more expensive.
  • Many businesses need a mobile presence to be found on and convey information, but large websites are unlikely to be used unless there are specific products needing to be served, thus a mobile site can be much smaller and therefore relatively cheap.
  • The loading time for individual pages is longer, therefore, affecting the user?s experience.
  • The on-site optimisation of a website is much more difficult to undertake i.e. the titles, Meta descriptions, Meta keywords etc on mobile phones.

?

There are benefits to making your website Responsive Design compatible within the near future: -

  • Responsive design is now thought to be the future of websites, therefore, at the beginning of having a website created, you may want to take this into consideration and have a strategy that will enable your site to easily adopt for Responsive Design.
  • More and more people are now using a variety of devices, especially when on the move, travelling to and from work. Therefore, do you need to capture this growing market audience?
  • If you have columns on your website, these automatically adjust to the size and position of the user?s screen.

?

Depending on your online business and marketing aims, you may or may not decide whether to design your website with Responsive Design in mind; as stated, there are benefits and disadvantages to doing so.

How Do I Decide if I Need a Mobile Website?

Like any business decision, listen to your customers or their activity. If they are in a mobile, outdoor or distress purchase category, the likelihood is that your business needs at least a small mobile website, if only to get found on mobile devices. Check your Google Analytics data. It will show clearly over time the increasing percentage. It will of course be different for many businesses, but when mobile traffic is over 10% it is probably time to be thinking about a website. When mobile traffic exceeds 20% you should certainly have a mobile site, it is likely that yo will be losing significant business. If in doubt, view your website and your competitor?s site on a smart phone and see how easy it is to read and navigate from page to page and if functions like finding you on Google maps and direct calling are easily accessible.
