Top 10 College Baseball Stadiums: 3. Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium (Florida State)

? July 31, 2013Posted in: ACC, CBD Column

dickhowserstadiumWhile college baseball season might be over, College Baseball Daily is keeping you covered by counting down the Top 10 Stadiums in the country. Each day we?ll have a different stadium, including the history and fun facts, until we reach the number one stadium in all of college baseball. We continue our countdown today at number 3 with Florida State?s Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium.

Florida State baseball has made a name for themselves over the past few years, and Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium has been their stage. Opened in 1983, Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium?s architecture is unparalleled; the gorgeous architecture and field make this a premiere destination to play ball. Seminole fans seem to agree with the beauty of their team and field, as they continuously pack the stadium year after year. In 2013, the Seminoles ranked eighth in Division I attendance, averaging close to 4,600 fans a game; they are annually a guest of the top 10 rankings. Mike Martin Field has also become to go-to destination for Regional games, as the Seminoles have hosted 26 games in the 30 years the stadium has been opened; there have also been five Super Regionals held at the field since the new postseason format was introduced. If you?re looking to fill time before the game, head on over to the first base stands. This is where the Mike Loynd Tradition Room is located; fans and visitors alike can learn about the rich tradition and history of the Florida State baseball program. There?s information about All-Americans, former Seminoles in the pros, as well as the World Series teams. Another wall in the room is lined with trophies won by the Seminoles in recent World Series and conference championships, as well as the Golden Spikes awards of Lyond, Mike Fuentes, J.D. Drew, and Buster Posey. When people come to visit the home of the Seminoles, they are treated to what Eric Sorenson calls the third best big game atmosphere in the country. They also contribute to the standard set by the Seminole faithful, with the record attendance in a season being set over the 100,000 mark nine times over the last 10 years. The stadium was renamed in 1988 to commemorate Dick Howser, who was Florida State?s first All-American player and a former Kansas City Royal, while the actual field was dedicated in 2005 for current Florida State head coach Mike Martin. Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium isn?t just a pretty place to watch a ballgame, it?s also a winning place for the Seminoles; the team is 822-162-1 overall on their home turf.

NFL training camp: What they're saying about Kiko Alonso as Buffalo Bills' No. 1 linebacker (links)

While much of what happens with the Buffalo Bills this season will likely hinge on the play of rookie quarterback?EJ Manuel -- the No. 16 overall pick of the 2013 NFL draft -- the remaking of the Bills' linebackers will also be a storyline to watch. The Bills used their third pick of the 2013 NFL draft to take former Oregon Ducks linebacker Kiko Alonso (No. 46 overall).

Alonso has already made a strong impression in training camp and could be tapped by new head coach Doug Marrone and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine to serve as the team's starting middle linebacker. If he earns the starting nod, Alonso will likely have the responsibility of calling out the team's defensive plays as well as making formation adjustments at the line of scrimmage.

Here's a look at what is being said about Alonso and what the expectations are for the Bills' rookie this season:

? Dan Murphy of Buddy Nixon writes about the "return to relevance" for linebackers on the Bills, thanks in large part to the addition of Alonso:

The unproven Nigel Bradham will be joined up the middle by presumed-defensive quarterback Kiko Alonso ... All of the measurables are there for Alonso; he plays with the versatility, speed and aggression required of the prototypical man in the middle, especially in Pettine?s seek-and-destroy system, and he displayed big-play ability with 14 tackles for loss as a senior at Oregon. The sky is the limit for Alonso.
? Dennis Amo of BuffaLowDown writes that of the rookies on the team, he expects Alonso to make an "immediate impact":
Kiko Alonso, LB, will be the favorite to start at middle linebacker with the Bills trading Kelvin Sheppard in the off-season for Jerry Hughes. He will be one to keep an eye on and will have to step up to help out a struggling defense.
? Carl Pfeiffer of Queen City Sports writes that Alonso will impress in training camp and will start the season as the one "calling the defensive signals":
Our line backing corps last year was nothing short of a joke. If Alonso can earn one of the starting LB positions then the one major weakness in our defense may have just turned into strength. At mini-camp he was running with the first team and calling some of the defensive signals. If Kiko plays like his college highlight tape, he may just conjure up memories of Shane Conlan, Jim Haslett and Ray Bentley. Don?t be surprised if Alonso wins the job early in camp.
? Chris Burke of Audibles on SI.com writes that that "most intriguing positional battle" in training camp will be for the second inside linebacker. He says Alonso has all but sealed his spot in the starting lineup:
The Bills need to find two starting inside linebackers, because a) they traded 15-game starter Kelvin Sheppard to Indianapolis and b) their flip from a 4-3 to a defense that at least incorporates the 3-4 in a hybrid approach stresses the importance of that position.

Rookie Kiko Alonso, a second-round pick, probably would have to bomb this preseason to wind up outside the starting lineup ? the coaching staff has raved about his work thus far, and Buffalo does not have the luxury of bringing him along slowly.

? Alex Parish of The Phinsider gives an "opponent preview" of the Bills. The Miami Dolphins insider tabs Alonso as the "Dark Horse Player of the Year":
Rookie linebacker Kiko Alonso is a pretty instinctive player, and will likely be asked to start straight away. Very athletic and very good in coverage, but needs to improve his run blocking skills. Nonetheless, he's a player with huge upside.
? Brian Galliford of Buffalo Rumblings writes that the Bills expect Alonso to be the team's No. 1 linebacker and "play the vast majority of defensive snaps":
The 6'3", 238-pound Alonso comes into the NFL with experience doing a lot of the things the Bills will ask him to do. In particular, his work in coverage will be an asset to the Bills, as will his high-4.6 to low-4.7 speed. He can blitz, he can play outside or inside (yes, even in Buffalo's defense), and he has the look of a linebacker dependable enough against the run that the team can reasonably expect to leave him on the field as often as possible as a rookie. ...

They need Alonso to be a playmaker - a guy that affects the passing game with big plays and the running game in the backfield. Alonso did that at Oregon. He'll be expected to do it at the NFL level right out of the gate, too.

? ESPN.com slots Alonso in as the No. 105 best individual defensive player (IDP). It says the following about him:
Buffalo's new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine is a linebacker guru -- who has hired two linebacker coaches -- with intentions of deploying this instinctual rookie as a three-down inside 'backer in his aggressive 3-4 scheme.

Antibiotic useand misuseis the main driver for selection of antibiotic resistant bacteria. This has led many countries to implement interventions designed to reduce overall antibiotic consumption. Now, using methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) as an example, Laura Temime of the Conservatoire National des Arts et Metiers, Paris, and collaborators warn that simply reducing antibiotics consumption does not necessarily reduce resistance. The research is published online ahead of print in Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.

The success of antibiotic reduction programs depends on which antibiotics are reduced, because some select more strongly for resistance than others. For instance, in the case of S. aureus, reducing use of clindamycin and methicillin lead to decreased resistance, while reducing use of penicillins does not, since most S. aureus, including MRSA, are already resistant to penicillin, explains Temime.

Additionally, efforts to reduce antibiotic use must be coordinated between hospitals and the community, since either can feed resistant bacteria into the other, undermining reduction efforts, says Temime.

In 2002-2003, a national program reduced antibiotic use in France by 10 percent. However, it fell short of the full potential for reducing resistance because it failed to target those antibiotics that generate the most resistance, says Temime. She and her collaborators developed a mathematical model of MRSA circulation, which correctly simulated that reduction, post-facto. They then performed a number of simulations of reductions in antibiotic use, which demonstrated the complexities of reduction efforts.

"We found that the reduction in MRSA hospital rates could have been much larger than it actually was following the 2002 antibiotic reduction campaign," says Temime. "Our results also suggest that changes in the distribution of antibiotics prescribed for non-hospitalized patients actually limited the impact of the antibiotic reduction campaign in French hospitals."

Their research shows that class-specific changes in antibiotic use, rather than overall reductions, need to be considered in order to achieve the greatest benefit from antibiotic reduction campaigns, says Temime. "This underlines the importance of generating surveillance data on both antibiotic class-specific changes in antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance in the years following an antibiotic reduction campaign. We believe that this research may help health policy makers and physicians in the design of more efficient antibiotic reduction campaigns."

Analysis: Investors wince but keep calm as U.S. budget battle looms

By Steven C. Johnson

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Another year, another battle over the U.S. budget. It's hardly what investors need, but it looks like they're going to get it just the same.

That doesn't mean it's time to panic. Last December's showdown over tax policy, while unpleasant, turned out to be just a minor speed bump for the U.S. stock market, which raced to record highs after Congress struck a last-minute deal on New Year's Day.

But with investors already nervous about the Federal Reserve's plan to start scaling back its stimulus program, another fiscal policy standoff could be more disruptive this time around.

In recent days, both Democrats and Republicans have been digging in their heels, setting up another possible nerve-wracking battle over the debt ceiling, which the Treasury expects to hit by November.

"Hearing Washington banter back and forth over this again was like a recurring bad dream," said Ron Florance, deputy chief investment officer at Wells Fargo Private Bank, which manages $170 billion in assets.

"We've already had the Federal Reserve adding volatility to markets, which, frankly, it should be doing at this point. Now we may see the legislative branch adding volatility, which it should not be doing," Florance said.

A similar drama over the debt ceiling in 2011 wore on for months, ultimately costing the United States its top triple-A credit rating and unleashing a global market rout.

Of course, much depends on how the economy performs in the second half of the year and what the Fed decides to do. If growth picks up steam and the Fed only modestly pulls back in its $85 billion-a-month buying of debt securities, as expected, then it might be easier to overlook Washington gridlock.

But if the economy stumbles, or if the Fed puts on the brakes harder and causes long-term interest rates to rise further and faster than expected, things could get dicey.

"We do think the economy is in much better shape today, so dysfunction in Washington will have less influence. But it will still have some influence," Florance said.

STOCK MARKET RISKS

The disagreement stems from a familiar ideological divide: President Barack Obama wants to boost investment in areas he argues would spur growth and top Democrats in Congress want to raise taxes, while Republicans want to cut spending and force the White House to scale back its signature healthcare program.

House Speaker John Boehner warned last week that Republicans would not vote to raise the government's legal borrowing limit without spending cuts.

Complicating things this time is an October 1 deadline for funding the government. While few expect Washington to actually shut down, the acrimony around budget talks could make it harder to strike a deal on the debt ceiling later in the fall.

Ironically, the immediate budget outlook has improved despite - or perhaps because of - Congress' pig-headedness.

The last-minute New Year's deal to avoid across-the-board tax hikes resulted in higher taxes on the very wealthy. And broad spending cuts designed to save more than $1 trillion over the next decade came into effect this year after lawmakers failed to agree on a more detailed and targeted package.

Coupled with swifter growth, this helped ease the threat of new ratings downgrades. The Congressional Budget Office now estimates the deficit, which exceeded $1 trillion for several years after the financial crisis, will drop to $378 billion by 2015, or just 2.1 percent of total output.

"They didn't do it the right way, but they got the right result," Florance said.

That said, the prospect of yet another last-minute deal doesn't mean investors can breathe easier. Brian Singer, a portfolio manager at William Blair & Co, which oversees $53 billion, said it's the public bickering and down-to-the-wire brinkmanship that's most disruptive and costly to investors.

The biggest loser may be U.S. stocks. Having soared to an all-time high and outperformed markets overseas, the benchmark S&P 500 is ripe for a correction, said Singer, who holds put options on the index that expire in late October, around the time the debt ceiling impasse may come to a head.

What's more, with Europe in recession, China slowing and Japan stuck in neutral, Singer said investors have come to see the United States "as the only source of growth and stability."

"If the budget debate leads to fears of instability and policy uncertainty, that could push equity markets down, and if investors think this is going to be problematic for U.S. growth, that would also cause equities to go down," he said.

Singer is long European equities and sees value in Spain and Italy, where he says economic conditions are stabilizing.

TEST FOR BOND MARKET

Treasuries, meanwhile, have sailed through recent budget battles unscathed. When the last debt ceiling showdown spurred Standard & Poor's to strip the United States of its top AAA rating in 2011, government borrowing costs actually fell.

But Thomas Graff, a portfolio manager at Brown Advisory in Baltimore, which manages $40 billion, said investors "should not take it for granted that the market will always be so forgiving."

For one thing, the global demand for bonds in general and U.S. Treasuries in particular has waned considerably. Between 2009 and 2012, when markets were reeling from crisis to crisis, global investors poured $1.1 trillion into U.S.-domiciled bond funds, data from fund tracker Lipper shows, by far the biggest inflow for any four-year period back to 1992.

But since Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke first suggested in May that the central bank could ease up on its monthly $85 billion bond purchases this fall and possibly end them next year, investors have yanked $49.3 billion out of bond funds.

That drove the benchmark 10-year yield to nearly 2.75 percent, almost a two-year high, and more than 100 basis points above where it stood at the start of May. The 10-year yield is currently at 2.58 percent.

"We haven't had this sort of political wrangling at a time when bond flows were drying up. Until now, there were always other buyers out there," Graff said. "Maybe this time around, they won't be there."

Gregory Whiteley, a portfolio manager at DoubleLine Capital, which manages $55 billion in assets, said investors should be prepared for more bond market volatility. But he added that Fed support will not disappear overnight and a still uncertain outlook for the economy will keep interest rates capped.

"Could the 10-year get back to 2.75 percent or even 3 percent between now and the end of the year? Sure, but that doesn't mean the next stop is 4 percent," he said.

In the meantime, properly prepared investors should look on the bright side.

"This could make things bumpy, but at the same time it will hopefully create some opportunities," Whiteley said. "It's been tough with no volatility these past few years to generate much incremental return, particularly in Treasuries."

Open house to showcase energy efficiency opportunities

The app on Frank Schaffer?s iPhone offers a series of bar graphs and percentages, breaking down the current and past energy usage statistics from all over his house.

?Every single circuit in the house has a monitoring system to it,? Schaffer said. ?I can monitor and calculate all of our costs right here for the past day, or past week. We have three kids. If they were to leave the fridge door open, the parameters can be set so that it sends us a text alert so we know something?s going on.?

In terms of energy efficiency, the future is here and it?s at 2215 W. 27th St. The 2,200-square-foot residence ? billed as Joplin?s first reproducible green home ? was opened for private tours on Friday, and will be showcased during an open house and block party from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.

Schaffer, president of F.E. Schaffer Construction, built the home utilizing the most up-to-date efficiency technology. From the AC unit and tankless water system to the hydronic furnace and plumbing system, everything has been designed to lower utility costs by making a much smaller energy footprint.

The former house on the property belonged to Schaffer?s mother, and it was destroyed in the 2011 tornado.

?We lived at 27th and Pearl and we lost our house, too,? he said. ?When she moved to Springfield, we bought the lot, but we weren?t sure what we were going to do with it. We were so busy that first year and a half after the tornado helping out, rebuilding other homes and running a business. But there was a lot of time to think about what we wanted to do.?

During that time, Schaffer said he became infatuated with the concept of energy efficiency and what could be done to bring electric costs down.

Partnering with Missouri Gas Energy and a number of other organizations, he built a home that captures the triple crown when it comes to efficiency. It has been certified as an Energy Star partner through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency program, received LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification, and a nod from the National Association of Home Builders? Green program.

One of the key components to the home?s success is the thermal enclosure system.

?If it weren?t raining, you could walk around the house and notice that there are no foundation vents,? Schaffer said. ?From the outside in, everything gets sealed.?

Then, there?s the two and a half ton HVAC system, and the hydronic furnace that taps into the tankless water heaters to heat the home.

While outfitting a home with top-of-the line technology does require a significant up-front investment, it?s one that eventually will pay for itself. The proof, Schaffer said, is in the bills.

?Last month, we were still constructing the house and we were in and out, in and out,? said Schaffer. ?The AC was running pretty much non-stop at 65 degrees to pull the humidity out of the house. Our bill was just $51.90.?

All of this is music to Catherine Hart?s ears.

Hart, the general manager of GreenTown Joplin, has been in Joplin since August 2011 to help educate city officials, private individuals and business owners about energy efficient and sustainable construction and think long-term when it comes to building.

?I am thrilled,? she said, during a private tour of the home on Friday. ?I know how much research, thought and intention went into this. To see it open, I?m so happy for (Schaffer) and the community.

?I hope that it can help demystify green building for people. This is just one of the many types of green homes that Joplin has, but it shows that a normal-looking house can be energy efficient. This is a home for the future. It incorporates a lot of the bells and whistles we?re going to see in homes down the road.?

Bob Painter, the manager of energy efficiency programs for MGE, said Schaffer?s home serves as the perfect showcase for what is possible.

He said that interest in energy efficiency was slow to evolve after the tornado, even though the utility was offering rebates as an incentive to those willing to rebuild with it in mind. After talking to other builders, he was connected with Schaffer and they decided to design the home around the tankless water system.

MGE is using Schaffer?s home as a case study, showcasing its energy-saving features in detail at www.energyefficiencyfortomorrow.com.

?We want to use the home as a teaching tool for how to build effectively,? Painter said. ?A lot of time, when you hear ?green home? you think it has to have solar. But this house doesn?t need solar because the envelope is so tight.

?I?m glad it?s here and where it is (in the tornado zone). It?s not a mega-home. It has plenty of space, but it?s on a smaller footprint. It?s a little on the upscale, but people can build a house like this affordably.?

Lunar cycle affects cardiac patients undergoing acute aortic dissection: Waning and full moon cycles impact length of stay, mortality

[unable to retrieve full-text content]If you need cardiac surgery in the future, aortic dissection in particular, reach for the moon. Or at least try to schedule your surgery around its cycle. A new study found that acute aortic dissection repair performed in the waning full moon appears to reduce the odds of death, and a full moon was associated with shorter length of stay.

Egypt's military issues 48-hour ultimatum

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's military gave a "last-chance" ultimatum Monday to President Mohammed Morsi: Meet the demands of millions of protesters in the streets demanding his ouster, or the generals will intervene and impose their own plan for the country. Army helicopters swooped over Tahrir Square trailing Egyptian flags, to the cheers of the crowd opposed to the Islamist leader.

The military's statement, read on state TV, put enormous pressure on Morsi to step down. Giant crowds demanding his departure in cities around the country for a second straight day erupted into delirious parties of celebration, with men and women dancing, and some crying as patriotic songs blasted from speakers on cars.

But any army move against Morsi after the two-day deadline risks a backlash from Morsi's Islamist backers, including his powerful Muslim Brotherhood and hard-liners, some of whom belong to former armed militant groups.

After the army statement, multiple officials of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood insisted that the military and street protests cannot overturn the legitimacy of the president's election.

Gehad al-Haddad, a spokesman for the Brotherhood, said in a Tweet that people "will go to the streets all across the country in refusal of any attempted coup." Pro-Morsi marches numbering in the several thousands began after nightfall in a string of cities around the country.

Thousands of Islamists massing outside a mosque near the Ittihadiya presidential palace reacted with shock and fury to the military announcement, some vowing to fight against what they called an attempt to thwart the "Islamist project."

"Any coup of any kind against legitimacy will only pass over our dead bodies," one leading Brotherhood figure, Mohammed el-Beltagi, told the rally. A line of around 1,500 men with shields, helmets and sticks ? assigned with protecting the rally against attackers ? stamped their feet in military-like lines, singing, "Stomp our feet, raise a fire, Islam's march is coming."

Army troops at checkpoints on roads leading to the pro-Morsi rally checked cars for weapons, after repeated reports some Islamists were arming themselves.

The army's stance also raises a unsettling prospect for many of Morsi's opponents as well ? the potential return of the military that ruled Egypt directly for nearly 17 months after the Feb. 11, 2011 fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak. During that time, many of those now in the anti-Morsi campaign led protests against military rule, angered by its management of the transition and heavy hand, including killings of protesters.

Even many who welcomed Monday's announcement expressed worries over a possible outright military takeover.

"Morsi will leave, but I'm concerned with the plan afterward. The military should be a tool to pressure, but we had a bitter experience with military ruling the country and we don't want to repeat it," said Roshdy Khairy, a 24-year-old doctor among the throngs in Tahrir Square Monday night.

Hours after its announcement, the military issued a second statement on its Facebook page denying it intended a coup. "The ideology and culture of the Egyptian armed forces does not allow for the policy of a military coup," it said.

Instead, in its initial statement, the military said it would "announce a road-map for the future and measures to implement it" if Morsi and its opponents cannot reach a consensus within 48 hours ? a virtual impossibility. It promised to include all "patriotic and sincere" factions in the process.

The military underlined it will "not be a party in politics or rule." But it said it has a responsibility to find a solution because Egypt's national security is facing a "grave danger," according to the statement.

It did not detail the road map, but it heavily praised the massive protests that began on Sunday demanding that he step down and that early elections be called ? suggesting that call had to be satisfied. It called the protests "glorious," saying the participants expressed their opinion "in peaceful and civilized manner." It called "for the people's demands to be met."

Morsi met Monday with military chief Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi and Prime Minister Hesham Kandil, according to the president's Facebook page, without giving further details. Associated Press calls to spokespeople for the presidency were not answered.

In a sign of Morsi's growing isolation, five Cabinet ministers said on Monday they have resigned their posts, the state news agency said. The five are the ministers of communications, legal affairs, environment, tourism and water utilities, MENA reported.

The governor of the strategic province of Ismailia on the Suez Canal, Hassan el-Rifaai, also quit Monday.

The swiftness of the military's new statement suggested it was prompted by the stunning turnout by the opposition on Sunday ? and the eruptions of violence that point to how the confrontation could spiral into chaos if it continues.

Sunday's protests were the largest seen in Egypt in the 2? years of turmoil since protesters first rose up against Mubarak in January 2011. Millions packed Cairo's Tahrir Square, the streets outside the Ittihadiya presidential palace and main squares in cities around the country on the anniversary of Morsi's inauguration.

Deadly violence broke out in several parts of the country, often when marchers came under gunfire, apparently from Islamists. In Cairo, anti-Morsi youth attacked the main headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood with stones and fire-bombs, while Brotherhood supporters barricaded inside open fired on them. The clash ended early Monday morning when the protesters broke into the luxury villa and ransacked it, setting fires.

Nationwide, at least 16 people were killed Sunday and more than 780 injured, Health Ministry spokesman Yehya Moussa told state television.

The crowds turned out again Monday across the country ? in slightly smaller numbers, but in a more uproariously joyous mood after the military's announcement gave them hope of a quick victory. The group organizing the protests, Tamarod, Arabic for "Rebel," issued an ultimatum of its own, giving Morsi until Tuesday afternoon to step down or it would escalate the rallies even further.

"Come out, el-Sissi. The people want to topple the regime," protesters in the Nile Delta city of Mahalla el-Kubra chanted, drumming out a rhythm with a stick on the carcass of a sheep . "Sheep" is the slur many in the opposition use against Brotherhood members, depicting them as mindless followers ? to the fury of the Brothers, many of whom are professionals from doctors to university professors.

The broad boulevards packed with anti-Morsi protesters outside Cairo's Ittihadiya palace transformed into a party. "In every street in my country the sound of freedom is calling," blared a song that originally emerged during the anti-Mubarak revolt. Bands on a stage played other revolutionary songs.

"God willing we will be victorious over the president and his failing regime," said Mohammed el-Tawansi, sitting on the pavement with his wife singing along.

"He divided us, now the people and the army are together. They will not be able to do anything. They can't fight the people and the army," he said, referring to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Down the street, protesters Amr el-Ayat raised a banner reading "cautious optimism".

"The military statement was good, because we have no other way now," he said. "But I worry people will deify el-Sissi. The military is to protect not to rule."

Some were perfectly happy to have the military take over. In Tahrir, Omar Moawad el-Sayed, a math teacher with the beard of a Muslim conservative, said he wished el-Sissi had outright announced military rule.

"The military is the most impartial institution now," he said.

Some hoped that the "road map" the military had in mind would be a framework drawn up by Tamarod. Under it, after Morsi steps down, the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court would become an interim president and a technocrat government would be formed. An expert panel would write a new constitution to replace the one largely drafted by Islamists, and new presidential elections would be held in six months.

For Islamists, however, the idea of Morsi stepping down was an inconceivable infringement on the repeated elections they won since Mubarak's fall, giving them not only a longtime Muslim Brotherhood leader as president but majorities in parliament.

Morsi and Brotherhood officials say they are defending democratic legitimacy and some have depicted the planned protests as led by Mubarak loyalists trying to return to power. But many of his Islamist allies have also depicted it as a fight against Islam.

"The military has sacrificed legitimacy. There will be a civil war," Manal Shouib, a 47-year-old physiotherapist at the pro-president rally outside the Rabia al-Adawiya Mosque not far from Ittihadiya.

Ahmed Abdel-Aziz, who was the "trainer" of the line of men doing military-style drills, shouted and roared in a tirade against Mubarak loyalists, Christians, judges, police, opposition politicians, columnists and writers he said were conspiring against Morsi. He said they attacked "anywhere that has Islam in it."

"El-Sissi's statement doesn't concern us. We will sacrifice ourselves to defend legitimacy and we will die if this is our destiny," he told The Associated Press. "If the whole of Egypt is wiped out so that God's word can remain, so be it."

At sunset, the cleric at Rabia al-Adawiya led prayers, asking God to "accept us as martyrs for Your cause and make Your slave Mohammed Morsi victorious."

Nearly 1,500 supporters of the president marched in the Canal city of Suez after night prayers, chanting for Morsi and damaging cars. Some carried sticks and rifles that fire birdshot, witnesses said. Residents confronted them, taking their weapons and firing in the air to disperse them, while the army deployed and fired tear gas.

Outside Ittihadiya, protesters contended that Morsi could not survive with only the Islamist bloc on his side.

"It is now the whole people versus one group. What can he do?" Mina Adel, a Christian accountant said. "The army is the savior and the guarantor for the revolution to succeed."
